Austin, TX    May 9 - May 13

The capital completed in 1888 after a ground breaking ceremony was held in 1882. it's the 2nd Capitol built on the site, 1st one went up in flames in 1881. The Capitol was restored to its 1888 - 1915 appearance during a 1990 - 1995 project.  Sam Houston moved the capitol to Houston 1841 - 1845.  Texas became a state in 1845.

Spanish Tejano Monument - Tejano's were descendants of Spanish explorers & colonist who settled in Texas.  They fought to keep the traditions but lost.

French Legation Museum - house constructed 1839 - 1841. Was used like an embassy, without diplomatic powers.  When Sam Houston moved the capitol in 1841 to Houston the house was sold to a catholic priest.  The house sits on one of the highest point in Austin, with views of the capitol.  It's an example of the Creole cottage architectural style.  The house was purchased in 1848 by Dr. Joseph Robertson from South Carolina, his descendants lived in the house until 1940.

We also enjoyed lunch at Salt Lick Barbecue, Driftwood, TX.  Erik suggested this place and it was good.
